About Me
What's a spiritually curious person to do when he's been raised in a Methodist household--including church on Sunday with home-based Bible study thrown in for good measure--but begins to sense as he gets older that there's something more? Something missing. Something that's either not being included or isn't widely known or understood.
My response was to continue to attend church services as an adult--which I still do to this day--because I believe in God as the ultimate Source of life, I believe that Jesus lived and walked the earth and spread valuable life-altering teachings, and I also believe in the Holy Spirit. So there you go: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, that's what's commonly referred to as Christianity. Trouble is, I still had that nagging sense that something wasn't quite right with the way the story was being told from a purely Christian point of view. So where does that leave me in terms of my faith journey: not fully buying into the approach offered through traditional Christian teaching, but also not wanting to leave it all behind.
At this point in my story, it might be best to tell you what I’m not, before I share with you what I now believe I am.
While I'm fascinated by all manner of scientific advancement, I’m not a physicist (quantum or otherwise), biologist, or scientist of any kind. I love exploring ideas relating to the mind, but I don't possess a PhD in psychology, philosophy, or any of the other weighty degrees beginning with the letter P. Religion fascinates me to no end, but I’m not a current or former priest, minister, monk, Omar, or rabbi, so I’m clearly not qualified to discuss the more scholarly aspects of theology. Finally, while interested in all things metaphysical, I also haven’t had a near death experience, talked to angels, channeled an ancient Master, or seen dead people walking the streets of my hometown.
What I do have is a five-day-a-week job, two kids, one dog, a loving spouse, a mortgage, a less than adequate savings account and a burning, insatiable, and wildly impassioned desire to understand my relationship with God. The question is, how do I work through that relationship within a world where life-altering scientific breakthroughs are a daily occurrence, the world’s financial markets are in a constant state of flux, terrorists seemingly lurk behind every tall building, and religion and politics have seemingly merged for many into their singular source of identity? Frankly, at times I find it all to be very confusing, a bit maddening, and more than a little unsettling. There, I said it. I feel better. How about you? No, really. How do you make sense of it all?
Well, I wasn’t sure either, so I dove into the literature hoping to find some answers. I read tons of books, thousands of blog posts, and innumerable journal articles on a wide range of topics; everything from neurotheology and nano-technology to how the brain processes complex data and why after thousands of years we still desperately cling to familiar myths to maintain our daily sanity. I also took time to simply get quite, do nothing, and listen to what some might call my Higher Self.
And then one day, while browsing the shelves of a local bookstore, I discovered a nondescript blue book titled simply A Course In Miracles. Since that fateful day over 20 years ago, my understanding of life’s true meaning has became so much clearer and a great deal stranger than I had ever imagined. Through the Course, I rediscovered my relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in a way that made complete sense for the first time in my life.
That's my story, but I respect the fact that there are many other paths for truth seekers. If you count yourself among the world's 2+ billion Christians, please know that you are welcome to this site, as are those from all religions and no religion. This site doesn't seek to convert, but rather to ponder and perhaps inform. If you read something you like, that's great. If you read something that you disagree with or even vehemently oppose, that's OK too. All that's asked is that we all try to respect the rights of others to hold differing views and to have the freedom to share those views without fear or intimidation. At the end of the day, we are all God's children. Let us all at least agree on that.
In closing, I'm willing to admit that my goal in creating this website was a selfish one, in that I write and post ideas here to seek answers to challenging questions that arise in my own mind. But believing as I now do that all minds are connected, I also hope that the content found within these pages will serve you in a similar fashion on your own spiritual journey.
